How to Choose Cafe and Restaurant Furniture That Lasts

A practical checklist for cafe and restaurant owners — seating comfort, table sizes, materials, space planning and how to order furniture that survives daily service.

How to Choose Cafe and Restaurant Furniture That Lasts

Cafe and restaurant furniture works harder than almost any other furniture. Chairs are pulled out hundreds of times a day, tables are wiped down after every guest, and the whole room has to look good in photos that customers share. Choosing well at the start saves you from wobbly chairs, stained tops and an expensive refit two years later.

1. Start with your floor plan, not the catalogue

Measure the room and decide how many covers you need before you pick a single design. As a starting point:

  • Two-seater tables: around 60–75 cm square for coffee and snacks.
  • Four-seater tables: around 75–90 cm square, or 120 × 75 cm rectangular for full meals.
  • Walkways: keep at least 90 cm between occupied chairs so staff can carry trays safely.

A mix of two-seaters that can be pushed together gives you the most flexibility for groups.

2. Comfort decides how long guests stay

A quick-service cafe can use lighter chairs with firm seats. A restaurant where guests stay for an hour or more needs upholstered seats, a supportive back and armchairs for at least part of the room. Seat height is usually around 45 cm for dining and 65–75 cm for bar stools, depending on the counter height.

3. Pick materials for daily commercial use

Solid wood frames with proper joinery last far longer than stapled or thin-section frames. Cane and rattan add warmth and keep chairs light, and they work well in cafes with a natural, airy look.

For table tops, ask for a sealed finish that handles hot cups, water rings and daily cleaning. For upholstery, choose fabrics rated for commercial use and darker or patterned colours in high-traffic areas.

4. Design the room as one collection

The most memorable cafes look planned rather than assembled. Choose one wood tone, one or two fabric colours and a consistent chair silhouette, then vary heights with bar seating, banquettes and lounge chairs. Matching indoor and outdoor ranges makes a terrace feel like part of the same brand.

Order a sample chair before a bulk order. Sit on it, stack it, move it around the room — it is the best quality check you can do.

5. Plan your order and lead time

  • Share the floor plan, the number of covers and photos of your interior style.
  • Confirm wood finish and fabric from physical swatches, not screen colours.
  • Approve a sample piece, then confirm quantities.
  • Keep a few spare chairs in the order for future damage or expansion.
